When drug or alcohol related infractions arise within the workplace, Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs) are called upon to evaluate the problem, recommend the appropriate education and/or treatment program, ensure compliance, and provide follow-up services as needed. ADAPT Programs is proud to work with numerous substance abuse professionals in Houston TX and throughout the metro area, all of whom are experienced in providing high quality, confidential services to employers and employees throughout a variety of industries.All employees who perform safety sensitive functions mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) are required to adhere to specific drug and alcohol testing regulations, which are laid out in CFR 49 Part 40. Employees who violate these regulations must complete a DOT Return-to-Duty process with a substance abuse professional before completing any additional safety sensitive functions. ADAPT’s substance abuse professionals are available to provide DOT SAP evaluations at any of our facilities.

Our Substance Abuse Professionals are specifically trained to work with companies regulated by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) as well as the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Our staff consists of licensed chemical dependency counselors, national certified addictions counselors, substance abuse counselors, and highly qualified medical professionals. As a result, all reports adhere to the Department of Transportation requirements and can be submitted in workplace disputes.
In the case of substance abuse violations, employees are required to pay out-of-pocket and successfully complete their required treatment program in order to return to work.

DOT SAP Evaluations
As a result of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act, Department of Transportation agencies (DOT) must perform both drug and alcohol testing on employees working in safety-sensitive jobs in the transportation industry. These roles include jobs such as pilots, bus drivers, truck drivers, ferry captains etc. Individuals in these safety-sensitive positions are subject to the following types of drug and alcohol tests:- Pre-employment screening
- Random drug and alcohol testing
- Post-accident assessment
- Reasonable suspicion testing
- Return to duty testing
- Follow-up assessment
- Pre-access screening
In the event that an employee should fail or outright refuse to complete a drug and alcohol test, the employer is required to immediately remove the individual from his or her position. In order to return to work, employees must undergo an evaluation by a DOT-licensed Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), successfully complete all treatment programs prescribed by the SAP, undergo a follow-up evaluation to ensure compliance, and provide a breath or urine sample that tests negative for drugs or alcohol.
